Hill must turn Dyer's power fight into a fifteen-minute kickboxing match

Women's StrawweightT-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas2026-12-12

The fight in 30 seconds

Angela Hill 52% / Shanelle Dyer 48%. Angela Hill is the editorial selection. The matchup takes away the grappling control behind most of Hill's losses and puts her in the phase where her experience, body work and fifteen-minute durability have usually won. Dyer's volume keeps it close: out-working Hill over three rounds is her clearest route, with the knockout behind it.

The Analyst's Take

Angela Hill (19-16) vs. Shanelle Dyer (8-1): women's strawweight, 3 five-minute rounds at T-Mobile Arena. Hill, 41, makes her 31st UFC appearance twelve years to the day after her debut and has never been stopped by strikes. Dyer, 25, has stopped both of her UFC opponents. Neither wrestles reliably, so the fight will be won standing and in the clinch.

Hill came to MMA from Muay Thai, won the Invicta strawweight title in 2016 and has since become the division's longest-serving fighter: 30 UFC bouts, a 14-16 UFC record, 25 decisions and more significant strikes landed than any woman in UFC history. She has never been stopped by strikes in 35 professional fights.

Her recent losses share a mechanism: Iasmin Lucindo took her down once per round and Fatima Kline opened with a takedown and side control. Against strikers she usually sets the pace, and in May she swept all three rounds against the former ONE champion Jingnan Xiong, landing 61% of her significant strikes.

Dyer is a London Muay Thai fighter from Great Britain Top Team with six knockouts in eight wins. She lost a close decision to Carol Foro on the Contender Series after getting up from multiple knockdowns and was signed anyway.

In the UFC she stopped Ravena Oliveira in the second round with a right hand, a head kick and clinch knees, earning a Performance of the Night bonus, then broke Elise Reed with sustained pressure in the third. Both opponents were well below Hill's level, and neither stoppage came from a single knockdown blow.

The Story of the Fight

Advantages, worst cases, gameplans — and the patterns underneath

Hill must turn Dyer's power fight into a fifteen-minute kickboxing match

This is a stand-up fight between two Muay Thai strikers, and neither is likely to win it by wrestling. Hill wants long scoring exchanges at range, where her jab, body kicks and experience pile up over fifteen minutes. Dyer's right hand and clinch knees turn short exchanges into finishes, so the fight flips if Hill is pinned on the fence and absorbing combinations late in rounds.

The Deep Read

The first fact of this matchup is what it removes. Hill rarely completes takedowns and neither does Dyer, whose attempts came mostly in a Contender Series fight she was losing on the feet. That strips away the mechanism behind most of Hill's recent defeats: Kline, Lucindo, Tabatha Ricci, Virna Jandiroba and Mackenzie Dern beat her by taking rounds through takedowns and control. Against fellow strikers Hill has usually set the pace. If she loses this fight, it will be because she was out-struck or stopped.

That is a real possibility, because Dyer is not a typical strawweight striker. Her output is extreme, almost all of it at distance, built on low kicks, teeps and body kicks, with the right hand as the hurting punch and clinch knees as the finisher. Against Oliveira she let a blitzing opponent overextend before cracking her with a right hand and a head kick; against Reed she was the aggressor from the first minute and wore her down on the fence until the referee stepped in.

Hill's answer is range management and output of her own. Nearly a third of her significant strikes go to the body, one of the highest shares in the division, and body work is the most practical way to slow a younger kicker over three rounds. The clinch is the contested phase: Hill grinds rounds there with knees, elbows and short punches, while Dyer finished Oliveira and battered Reed with knees from the same tie-ups. Clinching with head position inside and her hips off the fence is a scoring tool for Hill; being pinned with her back to the cage is the scenario most likely to produce the first stoppage loss of her career.

Age is the other half of the story. Hill is sixteen years older and has never been stopped by strikes, but durability tends to fade abruptly, and Dyer's offence is designed to stack damage. The counterweight is that Dyer was dropped more than once by Carol Foro on the Contender Series. Hill does not hit like Foro, but a sharp counter right hand is enough to make Dyer more careful, and a more careful Dyer is a slower one, which is exactly the fight Hill wants.

Path to Victory

Angela Hill

Keep Dyer at the end of the jab and body kick, score in short clinch bursts on her own terms and break away before Dyer can set her knees. Make Dyer reset after every exchange so her volume never compounds into the pressure that finished Oliveira and Reed.

Why they win
01
Primary route

Keep Dyer at the end of the jab and body kick, score in short clinch bursts on her own terms and break away before Dyer can set her knees. Make Dyer reset after every exchange so her volume never compounds into the pressure that finished Oliveira and Reed.

02
Supporting evidence

Hill has landed more significant strikes than any woman in UFC history and has gone the distance in 25 of her 30 UFC fights. Her losses come from opponents who take her down, such as Iasmin Lucindo and Fatima Kline; against strikers she usually sets the pace, as she did in a 30-27 sweep of Jingnan Xiong in May. Dyer has completed one takedown in her top-level career, so the fight should stay in Hill's phase.

The gameplan
  1. 1
    Entry

Lead with the jab and straight punches to the body to slow Dyer's kicking before she commits to the right hand.

  2. 2
    Position

Clinch with head position inside and hips off the fence, land short knees and elbows, then exit; never stay pinned against the cage.

  3. 3
    Adjustment

If a frustrated Dyer changes levels, punish the shot with the guillotine Hill used on Luana Pinheiro instead of wrestling for position.

Path to Victory

Shanelle Dyer

Win the volume battle early with kicks and the jab, hurt Hill with the right hand, then trap her on the fence and finish with knees and combinations. Stay standing; wrestling is not a viable plan against Hill's takedown defence.

Why they win
01
Primary route

Win the volume battle early with kicks and the jab, hurt Hill with the right hand, then trap her on the fence and finish with knees and combinations. Stay standing; wrestling is not a viable plan against Hill's takedown defence.

02
Supporting evidence

Dyer has six knockouts in eight wins. In the UFC she stopped Ravena Oliveira with a right hand, a head kick and clinch knees in the second round, and broke Elise Reed with sustained pressure in the third. She lands far more than Hill per minute, and at 25 she is sixteen years younger.

The gameplan
  1. 1
    Entry

Chop the lead leg and kick the body early to reduce Hill's movement and make the fence easier to reach later.

  2. 2
    Position

Use the right hand behind the jab and feints, and follow every clean shot with sustained pressure rather than a single follow-up.

  3. 3
    Adjustment

In clinches, take the plum or double underhooks with Hill's back to the cage; separate if Hill wins head position rather than fighting for it.

Danger Zone

How Angela Hill loses

  • Hill is backed to the fence repeatedly and absorbs clinch knees and combinations that build into a late stoppage.

  • Dyer's kick volume wins the count in every round while Hill's cleaner punches are too few to swing the judges.

Danger Zone

How Shanelle Dyer loses

  • Hill's jab and body work slow Dyer's pace and turn the fight into a technical kickboxing match won by the veteran's composure and clinch scoring.

  • A frustrated Dyer reaches for takedowns, burns energy against Hill's defence and exposes her neck to a guillotine.

Conditional tactical scenario, not a statistical projection

Round 1: what to watch

Round 1: Dyer calibrates with kicks to the lead leg and body while Hill tries to establish the jab and body kick early. Watch who resets first after the opening exchanges. If Hill lands and exits without being backed to the fence, she banks a round; if Dyer lands a clean right hand early, the fight tilts toward a stoppage.

Conditional tactical scenario, not a statistical projection

Round 2: what to watch

Round 2: both of Dyer's UFC finishes came after the first round, built on earlier damage. This is where Hill's body work either slows Dyer's kicks or fails to. In clinches along the fence, Hill winning head position and turning out means she is scoring; Dyer landing knees with Hill's back to the cage means the damage is adding up.

Conditional tactical scenario, not a statistical projection

Round 3: what to watch

Round 3: Hill pressed Xiong to the final horn and Dyer finished Reed early in the third. A trailing Dyer may reach for takedowns, which opens Hill's guillotine and costs Dyer her striking pace. A trailing Hill needs volume without trading in the pocket, a hard balance against a fresher opponent.

Subjective analyst estimates for the announced opponent and distance. These are not calibrated outputs from the prediction model. Method probabilities are portions of the overall outcome distribution, not percentages conditional on winning.

Hill is estimated at 52%, mostly on the scorecards: 44 of her 52 points are decisions, in line with 25 decisions in 30 UFC fights and with a matchup that removes the takedowns behind most of her losses. Dyer's 48% leans on the scorecards too: 29 points are decisions, because her volume meets a 41-year-old who has dropped three of her last five on the cards, and 18 come from KO/TKO, held well below six knockouts in eight wins because Hill has never been stopped by strikes.

This is a stand-up fight between two Muay Thai strikers, and neither is likely to win it by wrestling. Hill wants long scoring exchanges at range, where her jab, body kicks and experience pile up over fifteen minutes. The assessment is for 3 five-minute rounds at 115 lb. The six outcomes are mutually exclusive allocations conditional on a decisive result; draws and no-contests are not separately priced. Method shares are not conditional on the fighter winning, and the 100-cell display visualises these allocations rather than reporting simulated fights.

Hill drops toward 44% if Dyer's kicks and right hand land cleanly in round one and Hill cannot keep her back off the fence; she rises toward 60% if her jab and body work slow Dyer by the middle of round two and the clinch exchanges go her way. Scenario range for Angela Hill: 44–60%; the complementary range for Shanelle Dyer is 40–56%. These are judgment-based scenarios, not statistical confidence intervals.

3/10

Editorial confidence in the evidence, not a win probability or a calibrated confidence interval.

Confidence reflects the quality and comparability of the evidence, not the size of the win probability. Lean: Angela Hill.

What backs the lean
  • The matchup removes the takedowns and top control behind most of Hill's losses and puts her in the stand-up phase where her experience, body work and fifteen-minute durability have usually won.

  • Hill has never been stopped by strikes in 35 professional fights, and Hill is by a distance the best and most experienced opponent Dyer has faced.

What limits it
  • Dyer lands 9.10 significant strikes per minute, and both of her UFC wins were stoppages built on sustained pressure and clinch knees.

  • Hill is 41 and has gone 1-2 in her last three fights; durability can fade abruptly at that age.

  • These are subjective editorial estimates without out-of-sample calibration; numerical precision does not imply measurement precision.
